Signs Of An Attempted [soft] Coup In New Delhi

EXCLUSIVE: Signs Of An Attempted Coup In New Delhi

With a traumatized nation and a paralyzed government, a core group of secular ideologues and Hindu nationalists are executing a 'soft coup' in New Delhi to bring to power hawks who want to pursue America's agenda of grooming India as a regional policeman, sort out Pakistan and confront China. India will self-destroy in the process.  India's military and intelligence has been penetrated. The man who uncovered the plot, Hemant Karkare, the antiterrorism chief of Mumbai police, was the first target of the mysterious terrorists. Patriotic Indians need to wake up and save their country.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Preliminary signs emerging from India's power center, New Delhi, paint a picture of an unstable situation. Security is already compromised. But a bigger story is taking place in New Delhi, not Mumbai. There are disturbing signs that India, a nuclear-armed nation of a billion people, is witnessing a 'soft coup' attempt involving secular rightwing ideologues and Hindu nationalists.

Exploiting the fears of a traumatized nation and a government caught sleeping at the wheel, a core group of rightwing ideologues within India's military, intelligence and political elite are trying to overthrow Manmohan Singh's government. The plan apparently is to help the rise of rightwing elements in power and firmly push India in a confrontation with Pakistan and some other countries in the region.

The objective of this core group is to see India emerge as a superpower closely allied with the United States.  They are excited about American plans for India as a regional policeman and have no problem in confronting China and Pakistan to achieve this status. They think time is slipping and they don't want a hesitant political leadership in their way.  Already the instability in the wake of Mumbai attacks is being exploited to start a war with Pakistan.  The fact that this will also help U.S. military that is facing a tough time in Afghanistan appears to be more than just a coincidence.

In the very first hours of the Mumbai attack, the unknown terrorists were able to achieve a singular feat: the targeted murder of Hemant Karkare, the chief antiterrorism officer in the Indian police. The man was responsible for exposing the secret links between the Indian military and Hindu terror groups.  His investigation resulted in uncovering the involvement of three Indian military intelligence officers in terrorist acts that were blamed on Muslim groups.  At the time of his murder, Karkare was pursuing leads that were supposed to uncover the depth of the nexus between the Indian military and the sudden rise of well armed and well financed Hindu terrorism groups with their wide network of militant training camps across India.

Curiously, a CCTV camera has caught on tape one of the unknown terrorists when he arrived with his group at their first target: a train station. The man, dressed in a jeans and a black T-shirt and carrying a machine gun [see picture below], is wearing an orange-colored wrist band very common among religious Hindus. As a comparison, a recent picture of a Hindu militant activist taken during an event this year is shown to the right where the militant is wearing a similar band.

Left, a CCTV snapshot of one of the Mumbai terrorists, wearing the sacred Hindu armband and carrying a machine gun. Right, a picture of a typical member of Hindu terror groups, wearing the same armband.  The band is sacred to fundamentalist Hindus who believe wearing it shows devotion and brings good luck from gods. [click here if you can't see the pictures]

An aggressive advertisement campaign has already begun across India urging a scared population to rise against the government.

On Friday, front-page advertisements appeared in several newspapers in Delhi showing blood splattered against a black background and the slogan "Brutal Terror Strikes At Will" in bold capital letters. The ads signed off with a simple message: "Fight Terror. Vote B.J.P."

The Indian, the Pakistani and the international media has not woken up yet to this 'soft coup' taking place in New Delhi.  Some observers and journalists are beginning to catch its first signs. This is how a New York Times reporter, Somini Sengupta, has characterized it today:

"Mr. Singh's government had lately hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party with evidence that its supporters, belonging to a range of radical Hindu organizations, had … been implicated in terrorist attacks. Indeed, in a bizarre twist, the head of the police antiterrorism unit, Hemant Karkare, killed in the Mumbai strikes, had been in the midst of a high-profile investigation of a suspected Hindu terrorist cell. Mr. Karkare's inquiry had netted nine suspects in connection with a bombing in September of a Muslim-majority area in Malegaon, a small town not far from Mumbai. "

Evidence is emerging that Karkare knew he was facing the prospect of a violent death because of the investigation he was pursuing. What Karkare probably didn't know is that his elimination would come in such a perfectly executed operation.

Only hours before Karkare's violent death, his close friend, retired Colonel Rahul Gowardhan, received an envelope. Karkare called him to say he was sending him a confidential letter. This is how Times of India has reported the story:

Just some hours before that, Karkare had sent a letter to him in an envelop which had some "personal" content. "Hemant had called me up on Wednesday," said Gowardhan, a top official with MSEDCL. "As I was in a meeting, we decided to postpone the talk. He hung up saying he would be sending me an envelope. When I wanted to know the content, he told me to just read the letter that's inside it. I returned home and read it. I cannot share the content of the letter with anyone," said Gowardhan.

The highly sophisticated nature of the attack in Mumbai, lasting for almost 60 hours, diminishes the chances of a foreign invasion and increases the possibility that influential elements in Indian intelligence and Hindu militant organizations might have helped orchestrate this incident, pretty much like they did in the Sept. 29 Malegaon attack, in which they tried to simulate a Muslim terrorist group. In that attack, in which three Indian military intelligence officers have been arrested, the objective was to provoke a Muslim backlash that could justify a massive state crackdown against minorities.

Observers are already seeing how the hawks within the Indian establishment and Hindu militant organizations have seized the initiative from a paralyzed government. The Indian army and intelligence are already penetrated. Now the real culprits are channeling the fears of a traumatized people toward Pakistan.

India is on the same path today that the Bush administration hawks took the American nation on after 9/11.  But this time, patriotic Indians have the benefit of hindsight. They should stop the secular warmongers and Hindu militants from hijacking their country. The future of the entire region depends on it.

Mumbai attack: Was Nariman House the terror hub?

Mumbai attack: Was Nariman House the terror hub?
By: A Correspondent
Date: 2008-11-28

Mumbai: India's financial capital, Mumbai seems to be going through its longest night for the last two days. Wednesday, 9.40 pm,the affluent south Mumbai was struck by terrorists, at 12 different locations, including the VT station, a hub for all railway trains, to two of the most luxurious hotels, Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident.

24 hours later, the attention has riveted to these hotels, and a tiny nondescript building, barely a few meters away from the Taj Mahal hotel. Housing  a five-storied guest house for Israeli nationals, this building is turning out to be the 'den' for the militants.

"I saw 6 to 7 boats coming  in on Wednesday evening and about ten people unloaded many bags from these boats and then gradually took them into the building, Nariman House', Vitthal Tandel, a fisherman in the area said. "The building has many rooms and these are used a s guest houses by travelers, largely Israeli residents. None of us know what their names are", he said.

Virendra Ghunawat, a television journalist who has been tracking the Nariman House shootout since the time it took place Wednesday night, said even the cops have been cagey about details.

"Today, during one of the shootout exchanges, the cops managed to rescue a six year old girl and her mother. We know of a man who is critically injured and requires urgent medical help. A couple is also holed up inside apart from the militants", a senior police official said, who did not wish to be quoted.

The role that Nariman House is coming to play in this entire attack drama, is puzzling. Last night, residents ordered close to 100 kilograms of meat and other food, enough to feed an army or a bunch of people for twenty days. Shortly thereafter, the ten odd militants moved in, obviously, indicating that the food and meat was ordered, keeping their visit in mind, another cop added.

" One of the militants called up a television news channel and voiced his demands today, but, interestingly, when he was asked where are they all holed him, he said at the Israeli owned Nariman House and they are six of them here", one of the investigating cops said. Since morning, there has been exchange of gun fire has been going on and the militants seem well equipped to counter the cops fire. To top it, they have food and shelter. One wonders of they have the support of the residents, a local Ramrao Shanker said.

Cops did not want to go  into speculation. "Three residents of the building, all presumably Israeli residents, have also been killed since last night, allegedly by the militants. We do not have their identity and would not like to speculate on this angle", the cops said.

Report of Mossad agent being held and questioned by Indian security

Tarek Fatah: Look to Pakistan power struggle for roots of Mumbai murders
Posted: November 27, 2008, 4:37 PM by Kelly McParland

The terrorist mayhem in Mumbai had barely subsided when I received the first e-mail suggesting the attacks had been carried out by agents of Mossad — Israel's foreign intelligence agency — masquerading as Islamic terrorists to give Muslims a bad name.

Alex James of Toronto forwarded a news item claiming, "India's Internal Security Police are now holding and questioning an identified Israeli Mossad agent, who had been in communication with some of the alleged terrorists in India two weeks before the black-op attacks took place."

As ridiculous as this may sound, chances are that countless Muslims are deluding themselves into believing that it is not their co-religionists who are responsible for the savagery let loose on India, but some hidden U.S.-Zionist conspiracy against Islam.

If at all there was an intelligence agency whose fingerprints can be spotted at the crime scene, it appears to be Islamist rogue elements from Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), which is hell-bent on disrupting India's (recently improving) relations with neighbouring Pakistan.

For two decades, the ISI has been the de-facto government in Pakistan, toppling regimes, aiding the Taliban, giving cover to al-Qaeda fugitives and running a business empire worth billions of dollars.
In July, the new democratically elected government in Islamabad, led by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, attempted to bring the ISI under civilian control. Under threat of a military coup, it had to perform a humiliating about-face within 24 hours.

Then last Sunday, Pakistan's Foreign Minister announced that the political wing of the ISI, which is responsible for rigging elections and blackmailing politicians, had been disbanded, saying, "The ISI is a precious national institution and wants to focus on counterterrorism activities."

It seems the Foreign Minister had spoken too soon. Within hours of his announcement, the BBC reported that an unnamed senior security official had contradicted the statement.

While this tussle for control of the country's intelligence network was going on behind the scenes, on Tuesday, the president of Pakistan, Asif Zardari, threw a bombshell that caught the Pakistan military establishment off-guard. Speaking to an Indian TV audience via a satellite link, President Zardari announced a strategic shift in Pakistan's military doctrine. He told a cheering Indian audience that Pakistan had adopted a "no first-strike" nuclear policy.

This apparently did not go down well within Pakistan's military establishment, which has ruled the country for decades using the Indian bogeyman to justify the maintenance of a huge military machine on a permanent war footing.
Immediately, military commentators denounced Zardari, with one saying he believed the President was "not fully informed or completely aware of" Pakistan's policy on the issue.

To further alarm Pakistan's own military-industrial complex, Zardari borrowed a quote from his late wife,  Benazir Bhutto, who once said that there's a "little bit of India in every Pakistani and a little bit of Pakistan" in every Indian.
"I do not know whether it is the Indian or the Pakistani in me that is talking to you today," Zardari said, amid applause from his high-profile audience, which included diplomats, politicians and industrialists.

While most Pakistanis welcomed the new air of peace and friendship between Indian and Pakistan, the country's religious right was upset.

Just a month ago, the founder of one of Pakistan's most feared armed Islamist groups had accused Zardari of being too dovish toward India, and criticized him for referring to militants in Indian-held Kashmir as "terrorists.

Then, this week, the so-called Deccan Mujahideen struck against India with the clear aim of triggering a Hindu backlash against the country's minority Muslims — with the obvious attendant danger to Pakistan-India relations.

Most security commentators agree that the Deccan Mujahideen is merely a tag of convenience, and that behind this well-planned terror attack lies Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a major militant group fighting in Indian Kashmir — the same group that has recently warned Zardari to desist from warming up to India.

Time will tell whether these Islamists succeed or whether the people of India — Hindus and Muslims alike — can see through this provocation and embrace the hand of friendship extended by President Zardari.

In the meantime, Muslims around the world will also have to decide whether to enter the 21st century and distance themselves from the doctrine of armed jihad, or embrace these murderous haters of joy and peace.

Mumbai attacks part of "Blowback" for CIA double cross

Mumbai attacks part of "Blowback" for CIA double cross

November 27-28, 2008 -- Mumbai attacks part of "Blowback" for CIA double cross

by Wayne Madsen @ waynemadsenreport.com

The violence that is sweeping Mumbai's tourist and business areas is the work of rival Hindu nationalist terrorists and Muslim gangs, according to WMR's Asian intelligence sources. Scores have been killed and hundreds injured in the violence sweeping India's financial capital. Although the "Indian Mujaheddin" and "Al Qaeda in India" are the corporate media's suspects in the violence, the attacks have more to do with score settling and a warning by a CIA asset and Muslim-Hindu gang violence.

The violence began with some crude "dud" bombs being planted around the city. However, these are seen as "false flag" attacks carried out by HIndu nationalist terrorists who support the Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which hopes to beat the ruling Congress Party in forthcoming elections. The Hindu nationalists often wave the "Muslim terrorist" shirt to win popular support.

SOURCE - http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/

In the past, Mumbai's exiled Muslim "Mafia" boss, on-and-off again CIA asset Dawood Ibrahim, a veteran of the CIA's mujaheddin war in Afghanistan and who is now living in exile in Karachi, Pakistan and wanted by Indian authorities, has the street muscle in Mumbai to stop further violence. Ibrahim owns a construction company in Karachi, has financial interests in Dubai, and is, according to our intelligence sources, involved with the CIA in Kathmandu casinos and the drug trade in Nepal. The CIA has shown no inclination to apprehend Ibrahim and with the Hindu nationalists making a power play in Mumbai with attempted "false flag"attacks, Ibrahim has shown no desire to stop the violence.

Former Indian BJP Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani said that India was rebuffed by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice when he asked that Ibrahim be extradited from Pakistan to India over the December 2001 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament in Delhi. India handed the Bush administration a list of "Top 20" most-wanted terrorists in exile in Pakistan but the request was rebufed by Washington.

Torturing Democracy: A Documentary That Could Put Dick Cheney Out Of Our Misery

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Torturing Democracy, an expose of how and why America came to be involved in open large-scale torture of prisoners (many of whom were simply shepherds captured by mountain tribesmen and sold into captivity), is now available for viewing online.

As Scott Horton reported last month, PBS can't find a time slot for this Frontline documentary until January 21, 2009 -- the day after Bush and Cheney are scheduled to leave office.

Horton has reported more recently that this documentary could help to provide "A Ticket to The Hague for Dick Cheney". Why? Because it has the power to change the minds of influential people in denial.

Horton explains:
Gene Burns is one of the nation's most popular talk radio hosts. For years he has dismissed accounts of torture; America, he has said, does not torture. But last night, after watching Torturing Democracy and realizing that he had not understood how important and serious an issue torture had become, Burns abruptly changed his tune. Here's a transcript of his remarks.

German member of the European Parliamen in Mumbai said she heard british Pakistani terrorists

UK says no evidence of British link to Mumbai attacks
28 Nov 2008 18:03:54 GMT
Source: Reuters
(Releads with Brown quotes)

Erika Mann, a German member of the European Parliament who was on a
trade mission in Mumbai, said she had heard reports British Pakistanis
took part in the attacks and were killed but she did not say where she
had heard this.

"This information has not been confirmed yet," she said in a statement
put out by the Socialist group in the parliament.

The Evening Standard ran a banner headline in its Friday edition
saying "Mumbai Gunmen 'were British'".

It said two British-born Pakistanis were captured along with eight
others after Indian commando units stormed two hotels and a Jewish
centre in central Mumbai to free hostages.

2 terrorists were guests, two had joined as staff at the Taj

(Ed: Don't know how they managed to secure jobs just two days before?!)

Investigators have learnt that two of the six terrorists that carried out the attack on Taj Mahal Hotel on Wednesday night, were staying as guests in the hotel and had occupied rooms on the sixth floor.

Senior police officials revealed that while the duo posed as guests another two had taken up jobs as housekeeping staff in the hotel, two days before the attack. Together, the four terrorists had conducted a detailed survey of all the entry and exit points of the hotel 48 hours before carrying out the ghastly attack.

Once the survey was done, the stage was set for the remaining two terrorists armed with AK-47s and grenades to storm the hotel. The armed men barged into the main lobby of the hotel and began firing indiscriminately. The other four, who were already inside the hotel, took charge of the situation and carried out the mayhem that continued for over 24 hours, said the officer.

"
"I had seen the men in the hotel earlier. Two had recently taken up jobs in the housekeeping section, and the other two were guests," said a chef at the hotel.

The housekeeping recruitment agency has now come under the scanner. Investiga-tors suspect that the details furnished at the time of selection may have been fabricated. "Even the details in the guest registration counter might be fictitious," revealed an officer.

When contacted the Taj spokesperson was not available for comment.

Neocon view: Red Alert: Possible Geopolitical Consequences of the Mumbai Attacks

November 27, 2008 | 0434 GMT

A fire in the dome of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai on Nov. 26Summary
If the Nov. 26 attacks in Mumbai were carried out by Islamist
militants as it appears, the Indian government will have little
choice, politically speaking, but to blame them on Pakistan. That will
in turn spark a crisis between the two nuclear rivals that will draw
the United States into the fray.

At this point the situation on the ground in Mumbai remains unclear
following the militant attacks of Nov. 26. But in order to understand
the geopolitical significance of what is going on, it is necessary to
begin looking beyond this event at what will follow. Though the
situation is still in motion, the likely consequences of the attack
are less murky.

We will begin by assuming that the attackers are Islamist militant
groups operating in India, possibly with some level of outside support
from Pakistan. We can also see quite clearly that this was a carefully
planned, well-executed attack.

Given this, the Indian government has two choices. First, it can
simply say that the perpetrators are a domestic group. In that case,
it will be held accountable for a failure of enormous proportions in
security and law enforcement. It will be charged with being unable to
protect the public. On the other hand, it can link the attack to an
outside power: Pakistan. In that case it can hold a nation-state
responsible for the attack, and can use the crisis atmosphere to
strengthen the government's internal position by invoking nationalism.
Politically this is a much preferable outcome for the Indian
government, and so it is the most likely course of action. This is not
to say that there are no outside powers involved — simply that,
regardless of the ground truth, the Indian government will claim there
were.

Why destroy Pakistan? Is Obama's aim in Pakistan really killing Osama bin Laden?

Janes information group, the world's foremost source on intelligence
information, reported in July 2001 that "The Indian spy agency RAW and
the Israeli spy agency Mossad have created four new agencies to
infiltrate Pakistan to target important religious and military
personalities, journalists, judges, lawyers and bureaucrats. In
addition, bombs would be exploded in trains, railway stations,
bridges, bus stations, cinemas, hotels and mosques of rival Islamic
sects to incite sectarianism."

Ben Gurion on Pakistan, published in the Jewish Chronicle, 1967:

"The world Zionist movement should not be neglectful of the dangers of
Pakistan to it. And Pakistan now should be its first target, for this
ideological State is a threat to our existence. And Pakistan, the
whole of it, hates the Jews and loves the Arabs.

"This lover of the Arabs is more dangerous to us than the Arabs
themselves. For that matter, it is most essential for the world
Zionism that it should now take immediate steps against Pakistan.

"Whereas the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula are Hindus whose
hearts have been full of hatred towards Muslims, therefore, India is
the most important base for us to work therefrom against Pakistan.

"It is essential that we exploit this base and strike and crush
Pakistanis, enemies of Jews and Zionism, by all disguised and secret
plans."
